College Teaching Officer (CTO) in Computer Science

Applications are invited to an appointment to a 2-year College Teaching Officer (CTO) position in Computer Science at King’s College, part of the University of Cambridge. The position would commence on 19th January 2026 or shortly thereafter. The post is initially for a period of two years, but has the potential to be renewed subject to the availability of funding. 

King's has a long tradition in Computer Science; one of the seminal papers of modern computing theory was published by Alan Turing (King's 1931) in 1937, and Prof Geoffrey Hinton (King’s 1972) was awarded the Nobel Prize for Physics for his or foundational discoveries and inventions that enable machine learning with artificial neural networks. Former students of King's now occupy senior posts in academic Computer Science throughout the world, as well as positions of influence in the computer industry. 

The successful candidate will work alongside an experienced team of Fellows in Computer Science, who will work closely with the CTO and support them in their role. 

Responsibilities. The role will involve delivering small group teaching across a variety of topics in the first two years of the Computer Science undergraduate degree; assisting with Direction of Studies, which involves coordinating teaching and ensuring students are making good progress; interviewing prospective undergraduate students and assisting with admissions; and other tasks which may be necessary for organising and delivering Computer Science teaching at the college. The successful applicant will also have the freedom to pursue their own research interests, with substantial time available for this largely outside term. 

Person Specification. The successful applicant will be required to hold a PhD in Computer Science (or be close to achieving this), and to have good knowledge of a number of subjects offered in the Cambridge Computer Science undergraduate degree, especially in the first and second years:

Desirable criteria include experience with delivering small group teaching, and familiarity with undergraduate interviewing. The successful applicant would be expected to reside in or near Cambridge during term time and take an active part in the wider academic life of the College. 

Benefits. The starting salary is £38,636, based on the King’s College scale for fixed-term CTOs, which is spine point 41 within the Grade 7 University of Cambridge salary scale, with annual increments within that spine. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to be appointed a Fellow of the College, with privileges including all meals, and other College benefits. A college office will also be provided for teaching and academic study.
