The Department of Architecture invites applications for a Design Teaching Fellow. The post is fractional, 0.253FTE, working 9.36 hours per week, both in and out of term time. This post is to provide temporary cover, and therefore is fixed-term until 31 July 2026 or the return of the post holder, whichever is the earlier.

The purpose of the Design Teaching Fellow post is to teach architectural design on the three-year undergraduate BA (Architecture Tripos) and the new Master of Design, which lead to RIBA/ARB Part I qualifications.

Design Teaching Fellow roles are primarily for practitioners with experience in studio teaching, who are active in design research and up to date professional skills to deliver excellent teaching that benefits from and engages with Cambridge's local research-rich environment, and is intellectually challenging.

With the successful launch of the Design Tripos, the Department is especially keen to recruit those who may have a background or expertise at the juncture of Architecture and Engineering, and a demonstrable knowledge of working inclusively with diverse communities of students.

Over the course of the academic year a Design Fellow will:

  • Teach up to 9 hours per week during the 9 weeks of term. Studio teachers are expected to attend in Cambridge at least one day a week during term-time.
  • Take part in site visits, up to 12 hours per academic year
  • Assess/examiner students through an end-of-term crit - up to 9 hours for each Design Teaching Fellow each term
  • Take 8 hours per term of Professional Development
  • Attend two departmental away days each academic year
  • Spend 40 hours over the course of the year on preparation work to develop studio teaching. This will include writing briefs, liaising with Director of Studies, arranging external visiting critics, writing termly student reports and liaising with the model making workshop on material requirements for the studio.

The Department does not specify when preparation work takes place, but it is anticipated that any days where attendance is required take place within the c. 10 weeks of school term-time.

Candidates for this role must have:

  • a Postgraduate Diploma, MSc, MArch, MPhil or equivalent qualification carrying exemption from Part II of the RIBA examinations, or equivalent in Engineering.
  • experience of studio teaching and current experience as a practice-based architect or related field.
