Three 3.5 year PhD studentships in artificial intelligence in medicine or health data science funded by the National Institute for Health Research UCL UCLH Biomedical Research Centre are available within the Institute of Health Informatics. The studentships will commence from Feb 2026.
About the project
Successful applicants will work with the programme coordinator to identify a project and a supervisory team working with academics and clinical scientists from UCL and UCLH. The projects will cover studies of the application of AI in real clinical environments, the use of vision language models and other leading edge technologies to build tools from unique datasets, and the application of analytical tools to answer vital questions enhancing our understanding of diseases and well-being.
Applicants will be expected to contribute to teaching at the Institute of Health Informatics, with the commitment being equivalent to six months teaching over the lifetime of the PhD.
About the role
The student will work within the Institute of Health Informatics as part of a group of over 30 researchers using clinical data to improve our understanding of disease and the effectiveness of treatments, and implementing AI algorithms to deliver safer and more efficient care.
The student will have access to a unique training programme in AI in healthcare and health data science as well as a wide range opportunities for developing skills in a rapidly developing field at one of the world’s leading research universities.

About you
Applicants should have, or expect to receive an upper second-class Bachelor’s degree and a Master’s degree (or equivalent work experience) in a relevant discipline or an overseas qualification of an equivalent standard.

This studentship provides a starting stipend of £22,780 per annum and covers the cost of tuition fees based on the UK (Home) rate.
We are only able to support fees at the Home rate.
