The MARIS Lab in the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering (Maritime Studies Program) at Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore invites applications for a PhD position starting from August 2026. A Full scholarship opportunity is available for a candidate with an excellent academic profile (full tuition waiver and a monthly stipend during the PhD program). 

Research Area: Our research group's research focuses on, but is not limited to, the following key topics. The successful candidate will conduct PhD research related to one of these areas. For more details about the research group, please visit https://sites.google.com/view/marislab/

  • Data-driven ship performance analysis
  • Green and sustainable shipping technologies
  • Intelligent ship operation and navigation systems
  • Ship antifouling and hull maintenance strategies
  • AI application in maritime fields 

Required Qualifications:

  • A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree (or expected completion soon) in Marine Technology/Naval Architecture, Maritime Studies, Transportation Engineering, Computer Science/Data Science, or a related discipline.
  • Excellent programming skills (Python, Matlab, etc.).
  • Excellent proficiency in English (written and spoken).

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior research or industry experience in related areas.
  • Hands-on experience with AI/ML applications in the maritime sector
  • A good record of publications in reputable peer-reviewed journals or conferences.
