Research Areas and Type of Position

The candidate’s research shall concern at least one of the following areas:

  • Geometric measure theory,
  • Geometric analysis,
  • Elliptic partial differential equations, and
  • Calculus of variations.

This position yields the opportunity to conduct an independent research programme without teaching duties; it belongs to the research group of Ulrich Menne who acts as supervisor.  Possible present or future connections to his research are appreciated.

Structure of the Research Group

The group usually consists of around two MSc students, two PhD students, and two postdoctoral researchers.  For effective supervision and to increase connectedness within the group, each graduate student is assigned a co-supervisor one academic level higher.  Regular supervision is then carried out jointly by of Ulrich Menne and the co-supervisor.

Apart of the National Taiwan Normal University, the research environment in Taipei comprises the National Taiwan University, the National Center for Theoretical Sciences (NCTS), and the Academia Sinica.  In particular through the involvement of the NCTS, joint activities in various combinations–such as the NCTS international Geometric Measure Theory seminar and the NCTS Differential Geometry seminar–yield a steady exposure to progress in these research areas.

Salary and benefits of the position

The annual gross salary will be determined, depending on level of research quality and experience, according to the NTNU payment scheme in the range TWD 763,830 to 1,056,038; it is paid in 13.5 monthly salaries.  After insurances for health and labour, an estimated salary of TWD 739,338 to 1,027,370 results (approximately, USD 23,800 to 33,100, EUR 20,600 to 28,700, or GBP 18,200 to 25,200).  Effective tax rates (taking standard exemptions into account) correspondingly range from 2.1% to 3.0% when staying at least 183 days a year in Taiwan; a flat rate of 18% applies otherwise.  Furthermore, the position includes contribution benefits.

Starting date and duration

The starting date is flexible with the default being August 2026.  The duration will be 2+2 years till July 2030; the second two years are subject to confirmation of funding availability which will become clear in the first year (i.e., till July 2027).

Summaries top three publications: title and abstract of the candidate’s three most significant publications for the advertised research area; links (e.g., via DOI or arXiv) to full text appreciated.

Research statement: highlighting key achievements and future research plans.

Curriculum vitae: professional career, education (BSc, MSc, PhD, or equivalent).

Publication list: accepted journal publications, arXiv publications, PhD thesis.

Shortlisting procedure

Phase I: mainly based on reference letters and top three publications.

Phase II: additionally based on research statement and full text of top publications.

Phase III (optional): individual interviews with selected candidates via web conference.
