University of Cambridge - Department of Veterinary Medicine

Location: Cambridge
Salary: £35,608 to £46,049
Hours: Full Time
Contract Type: Fixed-Term/Contract
Placed On: 25th November 2025
Closes: 7th December 2025
Job Ref: PP48026

Location: West Cambridge Site

Temporary cover: This post is fixed-term for 3 months or the return of the post holder, whichever is the earlier.

The Department wishes to appoint a veterinary surgeon to assist with first opinion clinical service provision and teaching, from December 2025 or as soon as possible thereafter. This post provides an exciting opportunity to be involved in clinical training of 4th, 5th and 6th year veterinary undergraduates in a first opinion context with the current caseload primarily from the RSPCA clinic, Cambridge, as well as from the Queen's Veterinary School Hospital (QVSH) General Practice, which recently opened to the general public. This is a full-time role.

The RSPCA clinic is owned and run by the local Cambridge branch of the RSPCA, with veterinary services provided by QVSH staff both at the clinic and at the QVSH. The clinic is currently open Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday mornings.

In this role you will work alongside three other first opinion clinicians and be supported by other senior clinicians in the Department. You will also be involved in working with and supervising Junior Clinical Training Scholars (Interns) at the QVSH and RSPCA clinic. You will have sufficient experience and confidence in practice to work independently to efficiently undertake consultations, manage medical cases and perform routine surgical procedures, while supporting caseload and income generation. You will take a lead role in the work up and management of first opinion cases, whether RSPCA or General Practice, with advice from Specialists when required.

This role will also involve clinical teaching of neutering, dental and other routine first-opinion surgeries to small groups of final year veterinary students at the QVSH. There may be the opportunity to facilitate communication skills sessions with veterinary undergraduate students, and you may also be required to participate in other aspects of teaching the clinical theory course.

You may be required to participate in a weekend duty rota and may be required to participate in on-call duties during evenings/weekends. Currently the RSPCA clinic is open on Saturdays from 9.00am until approximately 1.00pm.

You must be a member of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons or hold a degree qualifying you for membership. Teaching experience, although not essential, is desirable.

Informal enquiries should be directed to Oliver Falconbridge, Clinical Business & Operations Manager - owmf2@cam.ac.uk
