Reports into: Head of Official Statistics

Working style: Hybrid - A blend of working from home and your nominated hub office. We have hubs located in London, Bristol, Manchester and Oxford.

The role:

Join our team to analyse complex data and communicate meaningful insights. You’ll provide expert input in the analysis of higher education data and statistical product development. This requires an appropriate level of domain knowledge or the capacity to develop such knowledge rapidly. This also requires the ability to schedule and monitor work, set priorities, coordinate work of more junior data analysts, and provide technical and/or statistical support and advice. The precise configuration of the knowledge and skills required will differ from role to role. 

What you’ll be doing:

  • Takes the lead on larger or more challenging work packages, agreeing a mutual schedule for that work with colleagues.
  • Plans & schedules work, manages projects, identifies, and agrees priorities across the team, ensuring an appropriate level of quality is maintained throughout.
  • Develops a wide understanding of HESA data and becomes a subject matter expert. Understands the wider HE landscape and how the HESA data fits in and is used by our customers. Works with our stakeholders when issues are identified or to provide expert advice or guidance.  Supports others in maintaining high standards and compliance. Internally this may be through knowledge sharing, coaching, and mentoring, and identified external training and development requirements.
  • Providing the strategy and prioritisation around the key areas to develop processes, and improve efficiencies, ways of working and outputs. To coordinate the implementation of these (i.e. through measures such as Reproducible Analytical Pipelines (RAP)).
  • Responsible for the production and development of new processes and statistical measures and products.
  • Develops effective solutions and smarter ways of working to drive efficiency savings.
  • Uses advanced data manipulation techniques and/or statistical skills to analyse HESA data. This could be to do more advanced work on trend analysis or correlating trends, to quality assure datasets, or to improve statistical output products.
  • May include line management responsibilities for more junior analysts.

What we are looking for:

  • Demonstrable experience of analysing quantitative data for presentation either orally or in writing. 
  • Proven experience of manipulating/analysing data from large databases.  
  • Expertise in using at least one of the following: SQL, Python, R. 
  • Ability to generate solutions to complex issues and takes the lead in the development of such solutions and in their implementation.
  • Ability to address strategic level problems as well as leading and mentoring other team members on how to solve problems.
  • Experience of visualisation software such as charts in excel or more advanced systems such as Tableau or Power BI.
