About us
The UCL Centre for Advanced Research Computing (ARC) is UCL’s new institute for infrastructure and innovation in digital research - the supercomputers, datasets, software and people that make computational science and digital scholarship possible.
We are an innovative hybrid: a professional services department that delivers reliable and secure infrastructure and services to UCL research groups, and a laboratory for research and innovation in the application of advanced computational and data intensive research methods, working in partnership with academics from all fields.
We are a home for the research technology professionals - research software engineers, HPC systems engineers, dev-ops specialists, data engineers, data scientists and data stewards - who support and collaborate in the delivery of UCL research, providing outstanding career development opportunities for these new kinds of research professionals
About the role
This role will be focused on providing the necessary storage configuration and helping users and data scientists with their data pipelines on the ARC Unified AI platform based on Kubernetes.
You will also be expected to work with ARC Data stewards and the infrastructure team to ensure that data is well managed. Furthermore, you will have experience or willing to quickly learn Kubernetes as an administrator to help with the general day to day administration, monitoring and development of our platform.
About you
A Senior Research Infrastructure Developer will be interested in building and supporting AI platforms in cloud native environments with the intention to become an expert. You will be a strong advocate for “building it right” – software defined, in version control etc. Therefore, you will have experience building, deploying and supporting equivalent infrastructure or applications in a research environment and/or industrial equivalent settings.
Experience in different storage technologies (for example NFS client, S3, GPFS client), database administration (configuration, monitoring, backup and recovery) as well as data engineering for AI are essential. Configuration management at scale using Infrastructure as Code (IaC) and Kubernetes administration experience are highly desirable.
Please use the cover letter upload option to tell us how you meet the criteria set out in the person specification. Further information about working in ARC can be found on our website www.ucl.ac.uk/arc If you have any queries regarding the vacancy or application process, please contact Jodie Jackson via
