Tutor in Architecture (Architecture Atelier)

The Manchester School of Architecture is ranked 5th in the prestigious QS world university rankings and enjoys the unique context of being a collaboration between Manchester Metropolitan University and the University of Manchester. It is one of the largest Schools of Architecture in the country with over 1000 students (typically representing some 85 countries) and over 150 staff from diverse backgrounds and is proud to retain both its quality and sense of community despite its size.

These facets generate a unique blend and balance between research led teaching, impressive and relevant research outputs (84% of research activity is world leading or internationally excellent), and extensive professional industry links, all of which encourage our students to cultivate their own unique approach to landscape architecture and their careers thereafter.

This specific tutor role is to work with the AND architecture atelier, most likely in the final year of the M.Arch programme. The atelier explores the role of architecture in the creation of inclusive cities by making methodological reference to philosophies of difference. This leads to three main areas of challenge - different approaches to and expectations of the discipline, the generation and employment of different methods of design/research and the exploration of the empowerment of different kinds of people. In broad terms we are looking for tutors with experience in practices demonstrating a concern with the majority of the following five principles:

Ethical practices: how architects and architecture can contribute to addressing global challenges.

Inclusive Cities: how cities can fully include people of all ages, attitudes and occupations.

Creative Commons: how architectural production can serve spaces of collaboration.

Common purposes: how architecture can operate in concert with other disciplines

Just resources: how production of the built environment can support global and individual health and well-being.

Qualified Architects and other creative practitioners with experience of community engaged or activist spatial practices would be welcome to apply. However, post holders should consider how they could demonstrate:

• Rigorous experience in architectural practice.
• Creativity and an openness to engage with unconventional forms of architecture.
• Knowledge and expertise of design research approaches.
• Special interest and expertise in the spatial aspects of social justice.

Some formal teaching experience is essential and you will also have exceptional inter-personal and communication qualities, excellent organisational and administrative skills, and a collaborative approach to working. We will also look to you to ensure an excellent student experience through the use of relevant and inspiring learning and teaching.
