The Department of Statistics is seeking applicants for two Florence Nightingale Bicentenary Fellow posts. These are career development positions intended to carry around half the teaching load of an ordinary Oxford faculty position. The successful candidates would be expected to take up their role in September 2026. Funding for research costs of £2,000 per year will be available.
The positions are offered on a fixed-term basis.
The successful candidates will hold a doctorate in the field of statistics or a related subject. The Department seeks candidates with interests in any field of research which integrates well with research by current members of the department. We aim to hire two candidates who can teach and supervise projects in a range of mainstream topics in statistics (for example, applied and computational statistics, statistical machine learning, simulation and statistical programming).
The postholders will join the dynamic and collaborative Department of Statistics. The Department carries out world-leading research in computational statistics, machine learning, theoretical statistics, and probability as well as applied statistics fields, including statistical and population genetics, bioinformatics, econometrics, statistical epidemiology and statistical finance.
These roles are advertised at a grade 8; however, we would be willing to consider candidates with potential but less experience who are seeking a development opportunity, for which an initial appointment would be at grade 7 (£39,424- £47,779 per annum with a discretionary range to £53,483) with the responsibilities adjusted accordingly. This would be discussed with applicants at interview/appointment where appropriate.
If you would like to discuss this post and find out more about joining the academic community in Oxford, please contact Frank Windmeijer (frank.windmeijer@stats.ox.ac.uk). All enquiries will be treated in strict confidence and will not form part of the selection decision.
To apply, please upload all documents as PDF files (via the 'Apply' button above) with your name and the document type in the filename e.g., Smith_CV.pdf. You should upload:
Candidates must also arrange for two referees to send supporting reference letters directly to hr@stats.ox.ac.uk, quoting the reference number & job title (183952, Florence Nightingale Bicentenary Fellow in Statistics) on the subject line of the email, by the application deadline. On your online application, please provide details of the two referees, and indicate whether the University may contact them now.
All applications must be received by 12.00 noon (UK time), Monday 12th January 2026.
