The Department of Arabic and Near Eastern Languages at the American University of Beirut invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor position in Arabic Literature, covering all periods of the Arabic literary tradition. The appointment is expected to begin on August 15, 2026.
We particularly welcome applicants specializing in Pre-modern Arabic Literature (including pre-Islamic, Umayyad, Abbasid, Mamluk, or Ottoman periods) and Modern Arabic Literature (including the Nahḍa, modern and contemporary poetry and prose, thematic studies, modern Arab thought, gender studies, and related fields. Applicants must hold a PhD in Arabic Literature or a closely related field at the time of appointment.
The language of instruction in this department (and only in this department) is Standard Arabic (fuṣḥā), but mastery of English is an essential requirement. Applicants should demonstrate solid grounding in both the Arabic and Western classical heritages, including literary theory and grammar. A reading knowledge of French and/or German is highly desirable. Candidates must be able to teach humanities and Arabic communication skills courses in Arabic to native speakers of Arabic.
