Reimagine. Our Campus

The University of York exists for public good, combining academic excellence with social purpose. With a strong sense of purpose, a reputation for excellence, and clear strategic direction, we are creating an exciting and pivotal opportunity: the role of Director of Property & Campus Development.

Reporting to the Chief Financial and Operating Officer, this Director is instrumental in leading the planning, acquisition, and maintenance of the University’s corporate real estate portfolio and physical assets. Our University Strategy 2030 is founded on core principles including environmental sustainability, collaboration, internationalism, and equality, diversity, and inclusion.

The Role and Impact

You will be responsible for overseeing the campus strategy, including the planning, development, and maintenance of our extensive property portfolio. This role is essential to ensuring the estate aligns with the University's ambitious educational and research objectives. Your leadership will drive innovation, excellence rooted in customer service, legal compliance, and championing sustainability and operational efficiency across our campus environment

Key Responsibilities

  • Strategic Functions: Campus property master planning (current and future needs), property compliance and risk management oversight, and energy and infrastructure master planning.
  • Operational Leadership: Capital project leadership for internal and external teams, lifecycle and strategic asset management planning, and ensuring compliance with legislation like the Building Safety Act.
  • People and Culture: Leading and managing staff, developing them, and ensuring high performance. Role modelling a culture that puts equality, diversity, and inclusivity at its heart.

What we're looking for

We require an exceptional leader who possesses the vision, strategic acumen, and personal credibility to lead a transformative agenda.

Essential qualifications: Professional registration at Chartered level within a relevant property or construction discipline. Membership of a recognised professional body at corporate grade or above. Extensive senior management experience and ability to manage substantial budgets/resources (ideally within a higher education setting).

We are committed to fostering an inclusive and diverse environment. Female candidates and candidates who identify as Black, Asian, or from a Minority Ethnic background are strongly encouraged to apply, as they are currently under-represented in senior leadership roles at the University

Closing Date: 04/02/2026

Interviews: 26/02/2026

Informal enquiries are encouraged. Please contact Paul Ellison (paul.ellison@york.ac.uk), HR Recruitment Adviser.

The University strives to be diverse and inclusive – a place where we can ALL be ourselves.

We particularly encourage applications from people who identify as Black, Asian or from a Minority Ethnic background, who are underrepresented at the University.

We offer family friendly, flexible working arrangements, with forums and inclusive facilities to support our staff. #EqualityatYork
