About the School

The School of Arts, Culture and the Environment (SoACE) can trace its distinguished history back to 1852 when the Cheltenham School of Art was established. Today, as one of the three constituent Schools in the University of Gloucestershire, SoACE offers a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate courses, as well as Postgraduate & PhD study. Subjects offered include, Humanities, Journalism, Film & TV, Art & Design, Animation, Performing Arts, Photography, and Architecture, Construction & Environment.

About the opportunity

The school has an opportunity to appoint a 1.0 FTE, Lecturer in Animation. The appointee will be a member of a team of specialist lecturers in fine art, illustration, animation practice and theory. Now in its eleventh year the course has gone from strength to strength fostering close connections to Industry, the International Animation Festival in Annecy, and the Disney internship in London. Our students have gone on to work at companies such as Warner Brothers and Cartoon Network as well as a range of independent and boutique animation companies.

The successful applicants will be expected to support students specifically within the practice of 3D Animation and will have both industrial and theoretical context to their areas of expertise. They will be an experienced practitioner with knowledge of standard industry software packages such as, Autodesk Maya and/or Blender 3D, The Adobe Creative Suite to include After Effects, Animate, Photoshop & Premiere. And in the following animation specialisms: 3D Rigging, Animation Workflows Character Animation/Animation Post-Production/2D & 3D Animation Pipelines/Visual Effects basics for film production.

It is important that the appointee is technically hands on and can undertake the practical animation skills listed above. Industry experience is also highly valued by both the course team and the school and will, of course feed into our current cohort’s knowledge base. Applicants coming straight from industry will be supported in their own journey towards becoming educationalists.
