Our collections, assembled by Percy Powell-Cotton and his family, encompass archaeology, natural history, material culture and related disciplines. Since 2019 the Powell-Cotton Museum has demonstrated a sustained commitment to ethical practice in all work relating to decolonisation. In 2020 a Community Advisory Group was formed, including members of origin communities from the local area, their role was to support the reinterpretation of the East African collection, but their influence has reached much further, feeding into and advising on general change and museum wide development.
As part of PCT’s plan to embed this work as standard practice, we are recruiting a post-holder who can undertake the core activities needed to deepen understanding of the significance of our material culture collections, identify priorities for research and development, and ensure we continue to deliver best practice that positions us as a sector leader in this field.
