The School of Arts and Humanities is seeking to appoint a Senior Tutor (Research) to provide School-wide academic leadership in support of its research strategy and REF preparedness.

This fixed-term, part-time role is focused on delivering intensive research leadership, mentoring and strategic advice during a critical phase of REF preparation. Working closely with the Dean and the School Research and PGR Lead, the postholder will support colleagues across the School to develop high-quality, REF-ready research outputs, impact and research narratives aligned to College and School priorities. The role will play a key part in ensuring that the School’s REF submission is academically robust, strategically coherent and of the highest possible quality.

The Senior Tutor (Research) will contribute to the development and delivery of the School’s research strategy, ensuring that research activity enhances the standing, reputation and REF performance of the School. They will provide tailored research mentoring to tutors and other staff, supporting the development of REF-quality outputs, impact narratives and individual research plans. This will include peer review of research outputs, advice on positioning and readiness, and the delivery of workshops, briefings and one-to-one mentoring.

The postholder will advise the Dean and the School Research and PGR Lead on the strategic development of the REF submission, identifying strengths, risks and opportunities for enhancement. They will also support the refinement of research portfolios and statements, help determine relevant research objectives, and explore opportunities for research collaboration within and beyond the School to strengthen REF quality and strategic positioning.

Applicants will hold a first degree in a relevant specialism and have proven experience of assessing and advising on the quality and readiness of research outputs for REF or equivalent exercises. They will have a recognised international research profile in a relevant field, a significant record of contribution to research culture and development in fine art, and experience of working at postgraduate level. A strong commitment to equality, diversity and inclusive working is essential.

Experience as a principal or co-investigator, and evidence of supervising master’s or doctoral research (or willingness to undertake appropriate training), are desirable.

This is an opportunity to make a significant and focused contribution to the School’s research environment and REF success at a pivotal moment.
