We are looking to appoint Clinical Teaching Fellows (CTFs) to contribute to the education and training of medical students at the University of Exeter Medical School (UEMS). This is an exciting opportunity for a clinician who has completed their Foundation training to develop their medical education skills and experience.

You will be available to contribute to teaching delivery within all years of the BMBS Medicine programme, primarily based at St Luke’s Campus, Exeter with Year 1 and 2 students.

Our BMBS Medicine programme incorporates integrated clinical experience from the first month and is based around small group learning using real-world clinical cases. Students in Years 1 and 2 learn primarily through problem-based learning (PBL), workshops, lectures, and Life Science Resource Centre (LSRC) sessions. Their clinical and professional development is supported through Clinical Skills Resource Centre (CSRC) sessions, Professional Development Groups (PDG) and clinical placements in hospital settings and the community.

CTFs are core members of the medical education team at UEMS, providing our medical students with authentic and clinically relevant teaching that allows them to relate the foundational sciences to wider practice as the doctors of tomorrow. In turn, the role provides CTFs with rich experience and direct involvement in the education and training of the next generation of doctors, allowing for opportunities in pedagogy, scholarship and curriculum design and development as a medical educator.

We are flexibly offering the available FTE to suit a diverse range of individuals. Whilst we have multiple full-time posts available, we also envisage that this teaching role could be undertaken alongside the suitable candidate’s other clinical work, education and/or training.

You will be encouraged to undertake education projects and present at regional and national educational meetings. Post holders will be offered the option to undertake a fully funded Learning and Teaching in Higher Education (LTHE) programme which could lead to Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (AFHEA) accreditation and 30 Masters' level credits.

Applicants who already have 2 or more years of teaching experience will be offered the opportunity to undertake the ASPIRE Professional Recognition Pathway (PRP); the University of Exeter's experiential route to Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA). Please note that both LTHE and ASPIRE PRP are experiential routes to fellowship and application success for AFHEA and FHEA depends on colleagues’ experience and the way in which they articulate this. Whilst both LTHE and ASPIRE PRP will provide candidates with support, we cannot guarantee an award of fellowship by the time your contract ends with us as this depends on how well you engage with your teaching commitments and relevant programme.

For this post you will:

  • Possess a depth and breadth of core medical knowledge, demonstrated by a primary medical qualification and completion of the Foundation Programme, in order to teach and support learning on the BMBS Medicine programme.
  • Be able to demonstrate experience providing excellent teaching in a higher education or clinical environment.
  • Contribute to the design, development, and delivery of a range of undergraduate teaching; applying innovative and appropriate teaching techniques; providing constructive feedback to students; contributing to assessment where directed.

Please ensure you read our Job Description and Person Specification for full details of this role.
