Evans-Pritchard Lectureship

Applications are invited for the Evans-Pritchard Lectureship, to take place during the academic year 2026-2027.

The Lecturer will deliver a series of four to six lectures, usually during May. The lectures must be based on fieldwork or other indigenous primary materials and must offer an empirical analysis of social relations. They should have a reasonable (though not necessarily exclusive) emphasis on the geographic areas which Evans-Pritchard was chiefly concerned with: Africa, the Middle East, or the Mediterranean, and be within the disciplines of Social Anthropology, Archaeology and History. The aim is to develop the core of a book. The Lectureship is offered to scholars of promise, perhaps with some significant publications already, or to mature scholars who have embarked on new lines of research. A doctorate is required for eligibility.

Candidates for election should send an outline of their proposed lectures (no more than three pages), a CV with list of publications (no more than two pages), to academic.admin@all-souls.ox.ac.uk by Friday 13th March (12 noon (UK time). They should also ask two referees to send their references (of no more than two pages) to academic.admin@all-souls.ox.ac.uk – also to arrive by Friday 13th March, 12 noon (UK time). Referees should address to what extent and why the candidate should be selected as the Evans Pritchard Lecturer, and their perspectives on whether they will have a book length project to present as the lectures.

Remuneration: Stipend of £4,000, Common Table rights in All Souls College, and lodging in College (or one of its properties) for the period of the lectures, plus reasonable travel expenses .
