Research Assistant or Research Associate in Cloud Infrastructure

Imperial College London - Department of Computing

Location: London
Salary: £43,863 to £57,472 per annum
Hours: Full Time
Contract Type: Fixed-Term/Contract
Placed On: 14th January 2026
Closes: 15th February 2026
Job Ref: ENG03773

About the role:

This post of Research Assistant (pre-doctoral) or Research Associate (post-doctoral) is to conduct research on cloud computing and future cloud infrastructure, under the direction of Dr. Marios Kogias as part of his ERC Starting project titled CloudNG (https://cordis.europa.eu/project/id/101220079).

The post will be based in the Department of Computing at Imperial College London at the South Kensington Campus. The Department of Computing is a leading department of Computer Science in the UK and the world and has consistently been awarded the highest research rating.

What you would be doing:

CloudNG (Cloud New Generation) aims to rethink the foundations of cloud infrastructure in the presence of emerging hardware, such as programmable network devices and novel interconnects, e.g., CXL, and emerging applications, such as stateful serverless workflows and agentic AI. The project takes a clean-slate approach to cloud infrastructure by exploring new architectures, abstractions, and execution models towards designing the next-generation unified cloud stack. CloudNG has a strong emphasis on performance and performance predictability, sustainability, seamless accelerator integration, and by-construction guarantees. The candidate will contribute to different aspects of the design and implementation of the CloudNG cloud stack, including both the control and dataplanes. The project offers a lot of flexibility for successful candidates to bring in their own research agenda and strongly influence the direction.

The successful candidate will collaborate with Dr. Marios Kogias in the Department of Computing, with members of the LSDS group, and with the rest of collaborators in the project.

In addition to presenting research in top systems and networking venues, the Research Assistant/Associate will be expected to contribute towards developing, documenting, and maintaining opensource software related to this project.
