Lecturer in Biotechnology/Microbiology (EPC Pathway)

The Department of Natural Sciences spans the disciplines of Biology, Chemistry, Environmental Science and Geography. The Department delivers courses to over 1,500 students across and has over 80 members of academic staff with ambitious plans for excellent education and research. Our ethos is to be highly innovative in teaching and research and we are recognised as the sector leader in Degree Apprenticeships where we deliver Bioscience and Chemical Science programmes in collaboration with a wide range of companies. The Department has a long track record of obtaining research council, EU, charity and government funding and has a growing portfolio of impactful projects. The Department is in an exceptional space, housed in the Faculty's new Dalton Building at the heart of Manchester, and with strong research and teaching performance across the Department. 

About the Role & Team 

We are looking for candidates with expertise in biotechnology, who will teach across our MSc Biotechnology, as well as microbiology and molecular biology provision within our undergraduate, post graduate and degree apprenticeship provision. You will be a passionate academic with an excellent and accelerating profile in education and professional practice. You will provide academic leadership in curriculum and education development within the department which may include formal educational leadership roles, initiatives that transform student outcomes, and innovations in educational practice. This work may be grounded in the scholarship of teaching and learning, or pedagogy, or may bring experiences from the world of practice. The role is offered fixed-term for 2 years. 

Key Responsibilities 

All lecturers on the EPC pathway contribute to our core goals of ‘Excellent Education' and demonstrate their active support for the University's commitment to sustainability and its values: student-centred, people-led, future-focused, inclusive and Manchester Met proud. Lecturers are also expected to develop their external profile, participating in networks and taking roles that contribute towards the vitality of the discipline and the reputation of the University. Such roles will be suited to early career academics and might be in business engagement or with other universities, funding bodies, government committees and learned societies or through public engagement. 

Key Skills & Experiences  

The ideal candidate will have: 

  • Prior experience in biotechnology education and research with specific and current expertise in microbial biotechnology 
  • A good first degree together with a PhD in a discipline relevant to biotechnology. 
  • Experience of teaching and supporting student learning, developing educational practice in the area of biotechnology.
