Student and Registry Services is one of the larger Professional Services divisions at UCL, providing essential services to UCL’s 50,000 students, 160,000 applicants and for supporting academic departments and administrative staff in delivering a high-quality student experience. UCL Student Support and Wellbeing Services (SSWS) provides information, advice and welfare support for all registered students, including delivery of related student events. About the role
The Head of Student Support and Wellbeing Services (Student of Concern and Safeguarding) provides leadership and management and is responsible for the effective operation of the mental health and wellbeing support provision for UCL students. They are responsible for managing a team of skilled professionals including Student Support and Wellbeing Managers who deliver non-therapeutic support, provide advice and guidance to students and staff within the UCL community. The postholder is responsible for our response to student of concern reports and ensuring service level agreements are adhered to. They will provide expert guidance and complete safeguarding referrals. They will chair the safeguarding group and be a designated safeguarding lead for UCL students. They work closely with colleagues in Student Support and Wellbeing and across the UCL community to promote an understanding of inclusive practice, disability and wellbeing issues.
About you
Applicants will demonstrate a strong understanding of the Higher Education sector, particularly in relation to the management and administration of student services across undergraduate and postgraduate provision, including both UK and international students. They will have experience of managing or coordinating a busy service environment and supporting complex or sensitive cases, applying inclusive and professional practice.
Applicants will have a strong working knowledge of Disabled Students’ Allowance (DSA) processes, including those administered by Student Finance England, Research Councils, and other relevant funding bodies, alongside a sound understanding of relevant disability, equality, and safeguarding legislation, and a clear commitment to maintaining up-to-date knowledge and best practice.
They will demonstrate effective people-management capabilities and excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with experience of managing student or client relationships sensitively and respectfully. Applicants will also show a clear understanding of best practice in safeguarding and in responding appropriately to sensitive or urgent student cases.
