The University of Buckingham is small by design, and that is very much a strength. As the UK’s only independent university with a Royal Charter, we offer a close knit, collaborative environment where people are visible, ideas travel quickly, and individuals genuinely make a difference.
We are currently in the middle of an exciting period of digital transformation. As our technology estate evolves, so too does the importance of strong, pragmatic cyber security that supports the University’s ambitions rather than slowing them down. To help us do that, we are creating our first dedicated Cyber Security Specialist role based at our historic campus in Buckingham.
This is a rare opportunity to step into a role to shape the development of cyber security for the University. You will act as the University’s primary cyber security specialist, working alongside IT colleagues, senior leaders, and the wider university community to embed secure ways of working and build a positive, security aware culture.
We are looking for someone with excellent cyber security and risk management skills, but who sees cyber security as an enabler and enjoys working with people as much as technology. The ideal candidate will balance hands on security activity with influence, collaboration, and clear communication working closely with an established IT Services team and external partners. Whether you are an experienced security professional looking for a role with real scope and visibility, or an aspiring specialist ready to step into a broader and more influential position, this role offers the chance to make a lasting impact.
You will have the freedom to help define what “good” looks like for cyber security at Buckingham and to influence University cyber security strategy. From shaping tooling and processes, through to supporting Cyber Essentials accreditation, improving incident response, and building awareness across the University, you will play a central role in strengthening our security posture while supporting teaching, learning and operations.
We would welcome conversations with a broad range of applicants. We recognise that no one candidate will tick every box, and we actively invest in developing our people. If you have a strong foundation in cyber security and are keen to grow and shape something meaningful, we encourage you to apply.
What can we offer you?
