The role

The University is seeking three new project managers to deliver of a wide range of minor projects across our diverse and complex campus. This is an exciting opportunity to work in a unique environment, with  historic and listed buildings alongside modern teaching, research and specialist facilities as part of a new team.

The role will be responsible for managing minor projects from early inception through to handover, ensuring alignment with the University’s strategic aims and future campus vision. Projects will vary in scale and complexity and may include refurbishment, compliance-driven works, adaptations to support teaching and research, and improvements to both physical and digital infrastructure.

Working closely with internal teams and external consultants and contractors, the postholder will lead on project initiation, options appraisal, programming and cost development. This will include coordinating surveys, statutory requirements and specialist inputs as required, and ensuring projects are planned and delivered safely, efficiently and to a high standard.

The role requires a confident, hands-on project manager with strong construction knowledge, capable of coordinating multiple disciplines, managing risk, and working effectively within a live operational environment. It offers the opportunity to work on interesting and varied projects, within a supportive professional team, contributing to the ongoing development and improvement of a high-profile university estate.

What will you be doing?

You will manage a varied portfolio of construction and refurbishment projects across the University estate, taking projects from early feasibility through design, delivery and handover within a live operational campus environment.

Key activities will include:

  • Leading project initiation and early development, including defining scope, commissioning surveys and specialist inputs, and addressing statutory and compliance requirements.
  • Preparing project briefs, programmes, cost plans and options appraisals, and supporting the development of business cases.
  • Coordinating internal stakeholders and user groups to ensure projects are practical, buildable and aligned with operational needs.
  • Managing external consultants and contractors, and overseeing project delivery to time, cost and quality.
  • Proactively identifying and managing risks, issues and dependencies, taking timely action to mitigate impacts.
  • Managing early-stage project governance, approvals and reporting, and ensuring effective handover to end users and operational teams.

You should apply if

  • You have a background in construction, building or a related discipline, supported by relevant professional and project management qualification.
  • You have demonstrable practical experience of managing construction projects from early planning through to completion, delivering to time, cost and quality.
  • You have a good working knowledge of construction legislation and best practice, including CDM 2015, planning and building regulations, and are confident applying these on live projects.
  • You’re comfortable managing contractors and consultants in busy, operational environments, with a strong focus on safety, quality and collaboration.
  • You enjoy working on varied projects across a complex estate, with an interest in historic, listed or older buildings alongside modern facilities.
