The Deputy Lead for Student Welfare works alongside other individuals and groups concerned with the welfare and pastoral support of students, including the Clinical Sub-Dean for Welfare, College tutorial teams and College Clinical Directors of Studies, the Medical and Veterinary Students Progress Panel, the University Occupational Health Service, the Clinical Student Mental Health Service and the University Access and Disability Resource Centre. You will interact directly with clinical medical students from the three programmes (the Standard Clinical Course, the Cambridge Graduate Course in Medicine and the MBPhD Programme).

Welfare support is provided in partnership with several organisations: Cambridge Colleges, the University Mental Health Service, the Clinical Student Mental Health Service, NHS and Occupational Health.  The sub-dean works with a 4PA Sub-Dean (Welfare) and a dedicated welfare admin team.

The role is based in the Education Division Offices of the Clinical School.  The majority of work will be face-face.  The weekly time commitment is 3 programmed activities per week (0.3 FTE / 3 PA per week).  This will be paid at the appropriate rate with respect to seniority and the postholder will be employed either through secondment from their NHS trust (NHS consultants) or a fractional contract with the university (GPs). The candidate should be working as a consultant or fully-trained GP within the Eastern region. All candidates for the post should hold full GMC registration and a license to practice. 

The postholder will report to Dr Ruwani Siriwardena, current Deputy Lead for Student Welfare, who will be Welfare Sub-dean from 1 April 2026.  For further information, interested candidates should contact Dr Siriwardena on rs983@medschl.cam.ac.uk.

Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 3 years in the first instance.

This appointment requires an Honorary Clinical Contract.
