Assistant Professor within the Faculty of Medicine (20 Positions)

Imperial College London – Faculty of Medicine

About the role:

The Faculty of Medicine at Imperial College London is seeking up to 20 new non-clinical Assistant Professors to join our world-class academic community.

This recruitment is a strategic initiative to strengthen our work in discovery and translational science, enhance our teaching offering and contribute to major cross-university initiatives as part of our Science for Humanity Strategy.

The Faculty’s research and teaching expertise lies within our eight internationally-leading departments, with interests spanning the entire biomedical spectrum, including: metabolism, cardiovascular and respiratory science, surgery, cancer, immunology, inflammation, infectious diseases, brain sciences, public health, epidemiology and basic genetic, biomolecular and cellular sciences.

We bring this expertise together to promote interdisciplinarity through cross-cutting research themes (including mental health, ageing, women’s health, paediatrics and child health and interventional science), cross-faculty research networks and centres and the School of Convergence Science. Recruitment is open to expertise in all relevant areas

including those with data and computational science expertise looking to both embed in medical and public health departments and to collaborate with clinical colleagues. Applications from those with industry experience are also encouraged.

Education also sits at the heart of our mission and a commitment to make a significant contribution to teaching and educational development within the FoM is a pre-requisite. All successful candidates will have an appropriate teaching load.

If you are a dedicated and talented early-stage scientist with research strengths aligned to any of these areas and the ambition to establish your own group as well as a passion for education, please read on.

What you would be doing:

These roles offer you an exciting opportunity to develop an independent research programme building on existing strengths in one of the departments within the Faculty of Medicine. You will contribute to a research area at the highest scientific levels disseminating your work through publishing and presenting to broad audiences to advance your field.

You will lead and support the delivery and development of both undergraduate and postgraduate educational endeavours of the Faculty, teaching and examining courses at all levels through lectures, seminars, tutorials, and coursework.

You will provide high-quality supervision and support for junior staff and students. You will collaborate widely, with other research organisations, with colleagues across Imperial, and with clinical colleagues.

You will actively contribute to academic citizenship and collegiality in accordance with Imperial Values. It is expected that you will demonstrate commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion across your activities.

What we are looking for:

Enthusiastic, ambitious and exceptional early-stage scientists with research strengths aligned to the Faculty seeking to establish their own groups. You will have a developing national reputation in your field with evidence of contribution to the development and performance of colleagues through coaching and mentoring.

Some success in grant applications and proven ability to publish high quality research in peer-reviewed journals, using your high levels of analytical capability.

Experience of training students; sharing your knowledge and expertise with fresh minds. You will design, develop and deliver a range of teaching modules and programmes, applying innovative and appropriate teaching techniques.

A great communicator with the ability to work and thrive in a multidisciplinary environment.

An emerging leader comfortable developing and managing the performance of colleagues. Your approach will align with the Faculty’s commitment to ensure an inclusive, supportive and progressive workplace culture that focuses on collaboration, community and wellbeing. You will take pride in contributing to a positive working and learning environment for all.

What we can offer you:

  • The opportunity to continue your career at a world-leading institution and be part of our interdisciplinary mission to use science for humanity.
  • Grow in your career with tailored training programmes for staff including dedicated support with navigating your career and managing research as well as a transparent promotion process.
  • Sector-leading salary and remuneration package (including 41 days off a year and generous pension schemes).
  • Be part of a diverse, inclusive, and collaborative work culture with various staff networks and resources designed to support your personal and professional wellbeing.
