The role

Are you a power electronics engineer, or an engineer with a practical background in radio frequency electronics, analogue electronics, pulsed power, or sensor development, looking to apply your background to next generation power electronic conversion and related measurement in pursuit of Carbon Net Zero? We are seeking motivated interdisciplinary researchers to join the Electrical Energy Management Research Group, University of Bristol, to develop high-performance SiC and GaN power electronics, with the associated high-speed sensing. You will be offered one of the following three salary grades: Research Associate, Senior Research Associate, or Research Fellow; depending on the number of years of post-PhD R&D experience, and how well your skills and experience align to the requirements of our current suite of research projects.

There are opportunities to work on more than one research project simultaneously to help develop your skills, and broaden your technical experience, gain industry contacts, and expand your publication record. We aim to align the work with your interests, personal development goals, & skills.

At the end of the project, you will be able to apply for any new opportunities within the group that may come up beyond the end of this role.

What will you be doing?

The successful candidate will join the Bristol Electrical Energy Management Research Group (EEMG) and participate in at least some of the following research activities depending on your skills & interests:

  • Developing new measurement technologies for high-speed power electronics
  • Pushing the performance and efficiency limits of SiC and GaN power electronic switching
  • Advanced gate driving
  • Automotive and wind-power scale power electronics, all wide-bandgap, modules up to 2.3 kV
  • Advanced power module development
  • New methods and tools for device & die analysis
  • Reliability analysis of power semiconductor devices
  • Industrial Collaboration across various sectors

You should apply if

Qualifications & Experience:

  • PhD or working towards equivalent R&D experience in Power Electronics, RF Electronics, Analogue Circuit Design, Pulsed Power, or similar areas.
  • A desire to apply your knowledge to multi-disciplinary engineering problems that help us reach Carbon Net Zero.
  • An ability and desire to work in a team, and to support PhD students.
