About the role:

We are seeking an experienced Safeguarding Officer for an exciting new role, working across two teams - the Global Summer School (GSS) team and Outreach team. You will support year-round delivery of a variety of programmes and initiatives that engage young people under the age of 18. This role will support young people from a wide variety of backgrounds, from the UK and worldwide, to access and engage with our programmes safely, building on our existing safeguarding practice.

What you would be doing:

Your responsibilities to the Global Summer School will include coordinating the safer recruitment of over 100 Imperial student ambassadors, reviewing safeguarding policies, drafting activity risk assessments, helping the team prepare for summer delivery, and liaising with learners with medical, dietary or access requirements and supporting delivery of summer schools.

The Outreach team deliver year-round activities to young people aged 7 – 18 years old who are under-represented in higher education and STEM. Your duties for the Outreach team will include working with the DSL(s) to review our safeguarding policies and practices, monitoring and spotting trends in incidents being reported by the team, updating and delivering training for our Imperial student ambassadors and other casualised staff, and supporting activity delivery where required.

An important part of this role will be supporting the two teams to share best practice, guidance and sector awareness.

During summer school delivery weeks in late June, July and August, you will be working across the South Kensington campus to support the delivery team with incident management and supporting participant welfare.

What we are looking for:

  • Extensive experience in safeguarding under 18-year old participants
  • Experience of giving difficult messages and having difficult conversations
  • Commitment to promoting a culture of safeguarding and child protection.
  • Ability to work effectively with young people and staff from diverse backgrounds
  • Experience in planning and risk assessing activities for under 18s participants
  • In-depth knowledge of UK regulations and statutory guidance on safeguarding
  • In-depth knowledge of safeguarding practices such as handling disclosures, liaising with families and schools, investigating incidents, supporting students in crisis and supporting student access requirements.
  • Empathetic and approachable.
  • Highly organised and detail oriented.
  • Ability to work under pressure, with little direct supervision, to tight deadlines and to adapt to changing situations in a considered and calm manner
  • Tactfulness, discretion and confidentiality are essential
