About us

The CRUK Scotland Institute is a cancer research institute, situated in Glasgow with approximately 250 researchers split across 30 research groups consisting of PIs, postdoctoral scientists, PhD students and scientific officers. It is one of Europe's leading cancer research centres, supporting cutting-edge work into the molecular mechanisms of cancer development. As well as core support from Cancer Research UK, the Institute also receives an additional third of its total income from external grants and industry collaborations.

Position outline

The Flow Cytometry Core Facility lies at the heart of our cellular analysis. We are looking for a motivated Senior Scientific Officer to join our technical team.

In this role, you aren’t just "running a machine"—you are a vital collaborator. You will provide the high-level technical expertise that allows our researchers to push the boundaries of cancer biology, from high-dimensional immune profiling to complex cell sorting.

Key Responsibilities

Day-to-day will blend high-end technical service with educational leadership.

Advanced Technical Operations

  • Cell Sorting: Perform complex, multi-way sterile sorts (using platforms like the BD FACSAria) for a variety of downstream applications, including single-cell transcriptomics and cell culture.
  • Equipment Stewardship: Manage the daily QC, calibration, and troubleshooting of our suite of analysers (e.g., BD Fortessa, Attune, or Sony ID7000).
  • Panel Design: Consult with researchers to design and optimize multi-colour panels, ensuring proper fluorophore selection and minimal spectral overlap.

Training & User Support

  • Empowering Researchers: Train new PhD students and Postdocs on autonomous analyser use, focusing on both hardware operation and the mechanics of flow cytometry.
  • Troubleshooting: Act as the first point of contact for experimental "hiccups," helping users identify issues with sample preparation, staining, or data acquisition.

Data Analysis & Innovation

  • Analysis Expertise: Assist in the interpretation of complex datasets using software like FlowJo.
  • Method Development: Stay at the cutting edge of the field by testing new reagents, protocols, and technologies (such as spectral unmixing or imaging flow cytometry).

The ideal candidate would have some hands-on experience in flow cytometry, the ability to communicate technical details to researchers and will be a proactive problem solver who thrives in collaborative environments.
