Arnold & Landau Fellow

London Institute for Mathematical Sciences

Location: London
Salary: From £51,000 depending on experience
Hours: Full Time
Contract Type: Fixed-Term/Contract
Placed On: 12th February 2026
Expires: 13th April 2026

The London Institute is recruiting a Russian theoretical physicist to join us as an Arnold & Landau Fellow, starting as soon as possible.

Background

In May 2022, we began recruiting theorists affected by the war in Ukraine. Our Arnold and Landau Fellowship programme, which has become the largest of its kind in the world, is currently open to scientists who have lived in Russia. We named it after the Ukrainian mathematician Vladimir Arnold and the Russian physicist Lev Landau. The programme has been written about in Nature, The Times and Troitsky Variant, and through it we have recruited a dozen scientists to date.

Job

The positions last for three years and start as soon as possible. Salaries begin at £51,000, depending on experience. Successful candidates will work in our rooms in the Royal Institution—we do not work from home.

Activities include: Conduct research in theoretical physics and publish it in leading journals. • Work with our science writers to publicise our discoveries on our website and in the press. • Work with our staff to help organise events, raise funds, recruit members and boost the Institute’s profile. • Take an interest in the research and goals of other members and help to make the Institute superadditive. • Socialise with our scientists, staff and visitors at our weekly drinks and regular events.

Candidate

Candidates should have the potential to become outstanding theorists of global standing. They will have completed their PhD in theoretical physics in the last several years, or be in the final year of it.

We do not assess candidates on intellectual merit alone. We also consider culture fit—the extent to which candidates align with our values. In particular, we are on the lookout for people who are sociable, relentless, team players, detail-oriented, curious about others, capable of leadership, committed to showing up for work, and willing to act as London Institute ambassadors.

London Institute

The London Institute for Mathematical Sciences is a new kind of research organisation that is dedicated to speeding up discovery. Our focus on peak performance, full-time commitment to research and the level of support we offer our scientists empower them to make the biggest breakthroughs.

The Institute is based inside the Royal Institution in Mayfair, which lays claim to 15 Nobel prizes and the discovery of 10 chemical elements and the principles of electromagnetism.

You can learn more about the London Institute at our About, Values and Perspectives pages.
