The Faculty of Modern and Medieval Languages and Linguistics in the University of Cambridge is seeking to appoint an Assistant Professor in German Linguistics, from 1 September 2026 or as soon as possible thereafter. The vacancy has arisen as a result of an academic in the Faculty being appointed to a Senior Tutorship in a college for a fixed period. The German Section will provide career development and mentoring for the successful candidate and is committed to equality, diversity and inclusiveness.
Candidates will have relevant teaching experience, will have completed a PhD in a relevant field by the start date for the post, and be able to demonstrate active, collegial engagement in research, teaching and outreach in German Studies. An excellent command of German and English, spoken and written, is essential.
We seek a scholar with teaching and research expertise in German linguistics, with a specialism in historical linguistics and/or sociolinguistics. The successful candidate will hold a PhD in Linguistics and/or German Studies (or will do so by the start of the contract). They will have a record of, or clear potential for, outstanding research in this field, commensurate with their career stage and with the international reputation of the German Section, and a strong trajectory. The appointee will be conducting research focused either on a period from the history of German or on the contemporary language. They will work with colleagues from across the Faculty of Modern and Medieval Languages and Linguistics and the School of Arts and Humanities, and will contribute to the successful launch of a new degree programme in Linguistics and Modern Languages (LML). They will be able to evidence collegial engagement, plus experience of or a keen interest in outreach in German Studies.
