Job Purpose
Bath Spa U Ltd is seeking to appoint a Senior Lecturer in English for Academic Purposes (EAP) to join the English Language Unit.
The postholder will play a leading role in the delivery of high-quality English language provision, while contributing to curriculum development, English language assessment, quality assurance, and the University’s embedded academic language strategy. The role combines high-quality teaching with academic leadership in assessment, partnership working, and the enhancement of English language provision across the University.
The role is based at the London Canary Wharf campus but will also support students across other teaching sites. Travel between sites will therefore be required.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
English Language Testing and Quality Assurance
- Lead the development, review and quality assurance of institutional English language proficiency assessments.
- Design and validate test materials to ensure reliability, validity and alignment with sector expectations.
- Lead moderation and standardisation activities to ensure consistency across assessors.
- Develop training materials and provide training for staff involved in English language testing and assessment.
- Monitor assessment outcomes, identify trends and contribute to continuous improvement of testing processes.
Teaching and Academic Leadership
- Deliver high-quality EAP teaching across in-sessional and embedded provision.
- Lead the development of innovative teaching approaches that enhance the academic success of students who use English as an Additional Language.
- Provide academic guidance and mentoring to colleagues where appropriate.
- Assess students through formative and summative assessment and ensure consistency and quality in assessment practices.
Curriculum and Embedded Academic Language Development
- Lead the design, implementation and evaluation of embedded academic language provision across academic schools.
- Work collaboratively with ELU staff at other sites, programme leaders and academic teams to integrate language and academic skills into discipline-specific curricula.
- Develop sustainable models of embedded support that align with institutional priorities and enhance graduate outcomes.
- Lead curriculum review and contribute to strategic enhancement of EAP provision.
Strategic Partnership Working
- Develop strong partnerships with academic schools, Admissions, Recruitment and external partners.
- Advise academic colleagues on supporting multilingual students within their programmes.
- Represent the English Language Unit on relevant University working groups and committees where required.
Leadership and Quality Enhancement
- Contribute to the strategic development of the English Language Unit.
- Lead quality enhancement initiatives relating to English language provision.
- Support institutional compliance relating to English language assessment through effective governance, documentation and quality assurance.
- Contribute to policy development and the implementation of sector best practice.
- Mentor less experienced colleagues and contribute to staff development.
Person Specification
Qualifications and Experience
Essential
- A recognised undergraduate degree or equivalent qualification
- DELTA, TESOL, or a closely related qualification in English language teaching
- Minimum 3 years Higher Education EAP teaching experience
- Demonstrable experience developing and quality assuring English language assessments
- Experience of curriculum development and working collaboratively with academic departments
Desirable
- Master's degree in Applied Linguistics, TESOL or closely related discipline
- Fellowship of Advance HE or PGCHE (or willingness to complete)
- Experience leading embedded EAP initiatives
- Experience of staff training and mentoring
- Experience contributing to institutional quality assurance or governance
