The Role
The Faculty of Science, Agriculture and Engineering is seeking an experienced and highly motivated Chemical Labs Technician.

This is an exciting opportunity to join a team of technical staff supporting the research activities in the School of Natural & Environmental Sciences, through the provision of technical support within the chemical research and teaching labs, and in support of technical services within the Bedson Building.

The post holder will provide chemical laboratory technical support for academic staff and students within the School of NES working primarily in the research areas and assisting in the teaching laboratories under the direction of the Chemical Labs Technical Team Leader support the Team Leader by:

  • Helping technical colleagues to manage shared laboratory areas, to allow users to work safely in a cohesive and collaborative environment.
  • Support the preparation and delivery of taught practical classes and UG/PGT projects within the Chemistry labs.
  • Working with technical colleagues and facility users to ensure equipment is maintained and working safely and reporting any issues or items that need repair in a timely fashion.
  • Working with technical colleagues and facility users to ensure equipment is prepped and ready for statutory testing and inspections.
  • Working with the team to help run the chemistry stores, as well as the disposal of hazardous waste.
  • Working with the team to help manage the provision of gases and cryogens to the facility users and ensure systems are working safely.

The post holder will be:

  • Capable of training (where applicable) and advising lab users on safe techniques and will work with users to ensure they are working safely and effectively.
  • Confident and competent with day-to-day management of Health and Safety and understanding H&S policies.
  • Capable of conducting their own experiments when required in line with teaching requirements and active research projects.

We are seeking a motivated and enthusiastic individual, with technical/research experience.

The candidate must have:

  • Experience in relevant laboratory environments with good understanding of synthetic techniques.
  • A good understanding of health and safety, and excellent team-working and communication and organisational skills.
  • Experience in use of gas systems and anaerobic techniques.
  • The ability to work autonomously and prioritise their tasks.
  • The ability to respond to unknown risks in a logical and calm manner, ensuring those around are safe and risks mitigated as best as possible.
