The MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology (LMB) is an internationally recognised centre of excellence in biomedical research, with research interests encompassing fundamental basic science and translational programmes enhancing the application to human health. More information can be found at www.mrclmb.ac.uk.
The LMB is seeking to fill the position of Head of Finance. Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer of the LMB, you will lead the vision, development and operation of the financial management service and associated functions for the LMB.
This is a broad and continuously evolving hands-on role that involves formulating and producing strategic financial plans, improving and developing reporting approaches and systems to support decision-making. You will provide high level expert financial advice and guidance within the LMB, helping to shape the future of the Laboratory. You will establish yourself as a key business partner with MRC Head Office and with UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) colleagues in the broader research community.
You will lead negotiations with external stakeholders such as the University of Cambridge, Cambridge University Hospital Partners and the Cambridge Biomedical Campus on financial matters as required such as shared costs, service and facility costs, income and expenditure, influencing their approach and securing agreement, so the ability to connect with people and build lasting relationships is paramount.
You will act as Company Secretary to the Max Perutz Fund, the LMB’s charitable arm, preparing the annual financial statements and Charity Commission return, liaising with the auditors, managing the Fund’s investments and preparing and presenting at the Fund’s twice-yearly Board meetings.
The successful candidate will have sound knowledge of corporate policy and accounting practices and procedures, preferably in the public and charitable sectors. You will be able to interrogate data and possess the refined analytical skills required to make and communicate recommendations rather than simply provide reports. You should have the ability to listen, understand business needs and provide solutions in a proactive and principled manner. You should have the ability to lead, motivate and manage services and staff in a fast-paced environment. An understanding of tax law and related risks related to research operations would be an advantage.
A salary at the higher end of the advertised scale will be offered to candidates with substantial experience.
The LMB has a collaborative working culture and state-of-the-art building based on the Cambridge Biomedical Campus. We have on-site parking, cycle enclosures and excellent public transport links to the site. We have a staff restaurant with roof terrace and access to a Campus nursery and sports and social facilities. You will be eligible to join our defined benefit pension scheme, a holiday entitlement of 40.5 days (including bank holidays and privilege days) and a generous employee discount scheme. We are also committed to providing training and development opportunities including support towards role-related qualifications.
