Senior Lecturer in Horology

Birmingham City University – Department of Fashion and Jewellery - School of Jewellery

Birmingham City University’s School of Jewellery, part of the Department of Fashion and Jewellery, is the largest in Europe, with outstanding facilities and internationally recognised expertise. Located in Birmingham’s historic Jewellery Quarter since 1890, the School has built a global reputation across its PhD, MA, BA, BSc and HND programmes.

We are seeking an enthusiastic Senior Lecturer in Horology to join our experienced teaching team within the Institute of Jewellery, Fashion and Textiles, part of the School of Art. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to the continued success of a world-leading centre for horological education.

You will be an accomplished practitioner with substantial industry and/or research experience in horology. A BA in Horology, MBHI or WOSTEP qualification is essential, alongside strong expertise in servicing, restoration and repair. Above all, you will bring a passion for the discipline and a commitment to inspiring the next generation.

In this full-time role, you will primarily contribute to the BA (Hons) Horology programme and support wider teaching and course management activities across the School. You will deliver and develop a range of Horology modules, using innovative and engaging teaching approaches that foster interest, understanding and enthusiasm. This includes fair and rigorous assessment, with timely and constructive feedback to support student achievement.

You will contribute to the day-to-day operation and overall management of the course, monitoring student progress and providing appropriate academic advice and guidance, including support for students with additional needs and mitigating circumstances. You will maintain strong links with the horological industry, professional bodies and institutions to ensure curriculum relevance, enhance employability, and facilitate placements and work experience opportunities.

In addition, you will engage in academic administration, contribute to recruitment and outreach activities, and be actively involved in producing high-quality, impactful research that informs leading-edge practice.

Informal queries regarding the role are very welcome and should be directed to Mathew Porton (mathew.porton@bcu.ac.uk) or to Jaq Prendergast (jaq.prendergast@bcu.ac.uk).

We are committed to equality, diversity and inclusion and to an environment that supports lawful free speech and academic freedom. We will continuously review and improve our policies, practices, and procedures to ensure that we are promoting these in all aspects of our operations. We believe that by working together, combining our many different backgrounds and life experiences, we will empower each other to reach our full potential.
