Chester Medical School is seeking an experienced and enthusiastic Senior Laboratory Technician to join the Division of Medical Sciences. This is an excellent opportunity to play a central role in supporting high quality teaching and research within a growing medical school.

About the role

The postholder will provide specialist technical support for undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, as well as academic research activity. You will work closely with academic and technical colleagues to ensure laboratories are safe, well equipped, and able to deliver an outstanding student experience.

This role involves preparing and maintaining advanced laboratory equipment, supporting taught practical sessions, advising on research projects, and delivering demonstrations of complex biomedical techniques. You will also contribute to health and safety compliance, procurement, equipment maintenance, and outreach activities.

Key responsibilities

  • Maintain high standards of health and safety across teaching and research laboratories
  • Prepare and support taught practical sessions for undergraduate and postgraduate programmes
  • Provide technical guidance and support for academic research projects
  • Demonstrate laboratory techniques to students with a range of experience levels
  • Maintain, troubleshoot, and coordinate servicing of laboratory equipment
  • Manage laboratory consumables, procurement, and inventories
  • Write and review standard operating procedures and risk assessments
  • Support audits and compliance activity including work under the Human Tissue Act
  • Contribute to open days, outreach activities, and emergency on call provision where required

About you

You will hold an undergraduate degree in Biomedical Science or a related discipline and have significant experience working in laboratory research environments. You will be confident supporting practical teaching and training students in laboratory techniques. Experience in areas such as mammalian cell culture, microbiology, or histopathology is essential.

You will be organised, reliable, and comfortable working independently as well as part of a supportive team. Strong communication skills and a commitment to delivering an excellent student and staff experience are key to success in this role.
