Senior Engagement and Training Coordinator

Salary: Full time starting salary is normally in the range £47,389 to £56,535 with potential progression once in post to £63,606

Contract Type: Fixed Term contract up to March 2031

Background

The University of Birmingham’s Advanced Research Computing (ARC) team is expanding following a major UKRI award to deliver the Baskerville National Compute Resource (NCR) GPU‑accelerated system. We are appointing a Senior Engagement and Training Coordinator on a five-year contract to join the Researcher Engagement and Data Group. The group ensures researchers know about available research computing services and have the training needed to use them effectively. The role focuses on engagement and training for Baskerville NCR, supporting a wide UK research network and communities within the University. It requires excellent communication and relationship building skills to raise awareness of Baskerville NCR, promote uptake across diverse disciplines, and connect users with appropriate expertise. Strong organisational and coordination skills, along with an understanding of researcher needs, are essential for planning and managing training activities. This is a full-time post from 1 April 2026 to 31 March 2031.

Main Duties

• Lead and manage outreach around the NCR.
• Working collaboratively, form partnerships both internally and externally to the University.
• Manage and coordinate service communications around the NCR.
• Develop, organise, promote and support the NCR’s training programme of advanced skills for research staff and students.
• Coordinate and generate appropriate supporting training material for remote use using multiple media.
• Proactively seek out and engage with research groups unfamiliar with the NCR.
• Drive the development of an active user community.
• Originate, source and maintain appropriate documentation to ensure that the NCR service remains accessible to a wide range of disciplines.
• Support the delivery of research-led teaching activity delivered by ARC.
• Liaise and engage with external professional networks within the HPC sector.
• Seek feedback from users to enrich the user experience, particularly around training needs.

Person Specification

• Educated to degree level or equivalent qualification, preferably in a subject with a strong data component. A higher degree may also be held.
• Broad and deep experience advising and supporting researchers with complex computing needs.
• A strong understanding of the needs of researchers and how these might differ from corporate IT settings.
• Sound understanding of core computing concepts including networking, security and scripting as well as a broad appreciation of the technologies that underpin the delivery of supercomputing services.
• Good customer relationship management skills, coupled with high levels of diplomacy and the ability to deal with all levels of professional and academic staff.
• Proven excellent communication skills through multiple media, both oral and written.
