The role

The School of Geographical Sciences is seeking to appoint a 1-year fixed term lecturer to deliver teaching across the undergraduate and postgraduate taught programmes, in hydrology and water governance. The successful individual will have experience of delivering lectures, practical's and seminars to undergraduate and postgraduate students across the geographic domain.  The role holder will specialise in delivering teaching to our Year 2 and taught postgraduate students, with units that include Water management, Floods and Flows in River Basins, and Research Methods in Physical Geography, as well as supporting dissertations and Master’s research projects that tackle environmental risk to floods through the use of modelling and quantitative analysis. The successful applicant will lead the teaching on the Year 2 Hydrology unit that is critical in supporting students towards their Year 3 units on Drylands and Environmental Risk and Resilience. Further, they will be expected to provide support and contribute to the curriculum, including in field courses, tutorial and pastoral care across all year groups, as well as supervision across a range of dissertations at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

What will you be doing?

The successful candidate will be:

  • Teaching methods relevant to physical geography with a focus on numerical skills for quantifying water flow across urban and rural catchments
  • Guiding students to analyse the interacting social and hydrological processes governing contemporary water resources.
  • Supervising undergraduate and/or master’s level projects/dissertations supervision of projects focused on environmental flood risk, supporting students in applying modelling and quantitative analytical approaches.
  • Preparing and effectively delivering a pre-written course of lectures and practicals and preparing for, and leading, teaching in small groups, as required.
  • Setting and marking coursework, examinations and other assessment tasks in a timely fashion and to an appropriate standard.
  • Providing effective pastoral support to a limited number of students, referring them on for further help and/or guidance as necessary.

You should apply if

  • Evidence of an ability to teach appropriately in various ways at different levels and to communicate clearly material of a specialist or highly technical nature.
  • Expertise in numerical modelling or quantitative analysis of water flows for a range of different environments, including rural and urban catchments as well as coastal waters.
  • Experience delivering or supporting fieldwork in a mentoring or teaching role.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues and students.
  • Ability to organise work time, meet deadlines, and manage competing priorities.
