The Department of Architecture is delighted to offer an exciting opportunity to join a new £1.18m UKRI funded project examining architectural, engineering, genetic and psychological determinants of thermal injustice in housing. The project is led by University of Strathclyde together with Universities of Bath, Oxford and Edinburgh. The post is based on campus at the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow.

You will have a thorough understanding of interdisciplinary research methods, developed knowledge and engagement in thermal comfort research in buildings, understanding of how to apply theory as well as an interest in Assemblage theory and justice literature. Previous experience of working collaboratively with a range of disciplines It is essential to be willing to work collaboratively and flexibly with a range of disciplines including legal anthropology, biomedical engineering, design, architecture and experimental psychology. You will have extensive experience in designing, making, and evaluating qualitative and quantitative led research methods, tools and materials, and experience of successfully working in research-intensive environments and preferably on funded large research projects that involve industry collaboration.

We would love to hear from you if you have a PhD in architecture or design a good knowledge and understanding of interdisciplinary research delivery processes involved in funded large research projects as well as ability to understand and analyse quantitative and qualitative data sets and information. An emerging publication and/or practice outputs history; and research interests which align with this area are of priority. Experience with interdisciplinary research methods are essential.

As a Research Associate, you will play a lead role in relation to the design and delivery of Work Packages led by Strathclyde Architecture as well as support Work Packages led by the University of Bath involving qualitative data collection methods and liaising closely with practising architects and engineers across the UK. You will be collaborating with PDRAs employed across the project as well as investigator colleagues to ensure the co-development and delivery of key milestones.

To be considered for the role, you will be educated to a minimum of PhD level in an appropriate discipline (architecture or design). You will have sufficient breadth or depth of knowledge in interdisciplinary research applied within the architectural environment as well as an understanding of thermal comfort and justice literature. Experience of qualitative research particularly design cognition and drawing on embodied techniques and visually communicating variety of research outputs is essential. You will have a developing ability to conduct individual research work, manage and conduct fieldwork, maintain records of the research process, manage data and disseminate results and engage in the dissemination of project findings to a variety of audiences.

Whilst not essential, applications are welcomed from candidates with: membership of relevant Chartered/professional bodies (including the Higher Education Academy), active engagement in applied research and/or a growing record of securing funding and managing research projects.
