Birmingham City University - Careers and Employability

Location: Birmingham
Salary: £35,331 to £39,002 per annum
Hours: Full Time
Contract Type: Fixed-Term/Contract
Placed On: 20th March 2026
Closes: 5th April 2026
Job Ref: C125007-R

Location: City South Campus

BCU is a diverse and inclusive learning community of over 30,000 students from more than 100 countries. We are committed to providing a transformational educational experience, supporting world-class research, and fostering a collaborative and supportive working environment. Our student demographic reflects the rich cultural and ethnic diversity of Birmingham itself, with a significant proportion of students from racially minoritised backgrounds. This diversity is a strength, and it calls for a workforce that is equipped to challenge deficit narratives and thinking — those assumptions that position students from underrepresented groups as lacking rather than recognising their assets and potential.

Role Summary

We currently have two positions available - one for a Permanent position and another for a Maternity Cover, which will be up to 12 months.

This is an important role contributing to “Talent for Tomorrow” a designated pillar within the university’s 2030 strategy. You will join our Careers team, which focuses on helping students and graduates turn their skills and ambitions into realistic career plans. You’ll provide one-to-one advice, deliver focused employability workshops, and work with academics and employers to create opportunities that lead to positive placements/graduate outcomes.

Key Responsibilities

  • Delivering individual and group-based workshops and sessions to students, developing their employability, preparing them for the workplace and enabling them to gain the most from their experience.
  • Work with the Careers team to develop students’ employability skills, targeting delivery to students and graduates who most need support.
  • Contributing to the organisation, administration and delivery of student work-based learning projects and activities.
  • You will be educated to degree level and/or have a vocational qualification and/or have equivalent experience, including a good standard of literacy and numeracy equivalent to GCSE English and Maths.
  • You will have experience in working with employers and a good understanding of recruitment and selection processes, and/or experience in developing employability activities and opportunities.
  • Relevant experience in a similar role supporting students in being professionally ready to enter the workplace would be beneficial.

Essential Requirements

  • Good understanding of how to engage less confident students, including those balancing work or family commitments.
  • Experience using technology to support and enhance service delivery.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with Careers & Student Opportunities colleagues and School teams to improve student success.

Desirable Requirements

  • Experience supporting a diverse student population.
  • Experience of employability advice within a university setting.
  • Experience working in a hybrid environment and managing your time across competing priorities.

For an informal discussion about the role, please contact Nejam Boksh, Careers and Employability Manager, at Nejam.Boksh@bcu.ac.uk.

The appointed candidate will normally be employed through our subsidiary company BCU Support Services Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of Birmingham City University. Appointees with prior LGPS membership who wish to enter the LGPS scheme will be able to do so and will be employed by Birmingham City University directly.

Equality, Diversity & Inclusion

We are committed to equality, diversity and inclusion and to an environment that supports lawful free speech and academic freedom. We will continuously review and improve our policies, practices, and procedures to ensure that we are promoting these in all aspects of our operations. We believe that by working together, combining our many different backgrounds and life experiences, we will empower each other to reach our full potential.
