About the Role

Lincoln Cathedral, in partnership with the Lincoln Record Society, is seeking a Librarian to lead the management and development of its historic library collections. This role offers a rare opportunity to shape the future development of the Cathedral’s research collections and scholarly partnerships.

The successful candidate will oversee the management and day-to-day operation of the Cathedral library, facilitate access for researchers, and promote the library’s collections within the academic community and beyond. The Librarian will also play a key part in reopening the Medieval and Christopher Wren Libraries and shaping their future role within the life of the Cathedral.

Working closely with the Canon Chancellor and colleagues across the cathedral, the Librarian will contribute to the development of a new Library, Archive and Research Centre. This outward-facing initiative aims to strengthen research, partnerships, and public engagement with the Cathedral’s historic collections.

The role offers the opportunity to collaborate with a range of partners, including the Lincoln Record Society, local universities, and the Diocese of Lincoln. 

Key Responsibilities

The Librarian will:

  • Manage the Cathedral library and facilitate access for researchers
  • Promote the collections to the academic community through publications, conferences, and research engagement
  • Develop exhibitions and outreach activities for visitors and the wider public
  • Catalogue early printed books according to professional standards
  • Develop and maintain an appropriate online presence for the library and its collections
  • Line manages the Assistant Librarian, student placements, and volunteers.
  • Contribute to educational programmes and events that promote the Cathedral’s collections
  • Support the development of the Library, Archive and Research Centre 

About You

We are seeking a candidate who brings scholarly expertise alongside a strong commitment to outreach and public engagement.

Essential requirements include:

  • Degree-level education and a postgraduate qualification in library, archive, or information studies (or equivalent experience)
  • Training in historical or descriptive bibliography
  • Knowledge of medieval and early modern palaeography
  • Experience working with medieval manuscripts or rare books
  • Experience delivering academic and public outreach events
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Strong IT literacy and attention to detail
  • The ability to work independently while collaborating with colleagues and partners
  • Desirable experience includes:
  • Cataloguing manuscripts or early printed books
  • Knowledge of digital tools for collections access
  • A working knowledge of Latin or other relevant languages
  • Experience editing historical documents or manuscripts
  • Project management experience
