We have an opportunity for a full time Laboratory Research Technician to join our core technical team at the School of Medicine, Medical Sciences and Nutrition.  The successful candidate will be primarily based in the Institute of Medical Sciences which is situated on the University’s Medical School campus at Foresterhill, one of the largest health campuses in Europe.  The IMS stands alongside the Rowett Institute, bringing together researchers from a wide range of disciplines including molecular biology, immunology, microbiology, developmental biology, neuroscience and cardiometabolic disease.

This post offers the opportunity to be part of a technical team by providing training and support to new students and staff and by carrying out experimental research within the Institute of Medical Sciences. There may be requirement to support multiple Principal Investigators (PI) simultaneously, therefore good organisational and time management skills are essential. The post will provide the opportunity to develop skills and learn new experimental techniques. Work in a laboratory may involve working with various hazards, including chemical and biohazards.

Individuals should have a formal scientific qualification (minimum of HNC in appropriate scientific subject) with extensive relevant laboratory experience gained over many years. Previous experience of the day to housekeeping and management of a laboratory, ordering and goods receipting, are required for the post. Excellent knowledge and understanding of Laboratory Health and Safety and Good Laboratory Practice, experience in supervising and training staff/students in laboratory techniques and experience in a wide range of advanced laboratory techniques (e.g., qPCR, cell culture, western blots, flow cytometry, cell culture, microbiological techniques, microscopy, immunohistochemistry, use of human samples and ability to use knowledge and experience to troubleshoot if problems arise.) are essential. Working in a large research team requires excellent interpersonal skills as well as good oral and written communication skills. Good time management and organisational abilities would also be beneficial. You should have a good understanding of IT systems and excellent communication skills (both written and oral), be highly motivated and able to work within a team.

Salary will be at the appropriate point on the Grade 5 scale, £33,002 - £36,636 per annum, and negotiable with placement according to qualifications and experience in accordance with the University’s Pay Policy.
