Contract Type: Fixed-Term/Contract
Placed On: 24th March 2026

Southampton Education School is a flourishing centre of research and teaching excellence. It has a well-established programme of Initial Teacher Education in both primary and secondary PGCE, rated Outstanding in all areas (Ofsted, 2023)

We are looking to appoint an experienced and well qualified Science Teacher Educator, specialising in Physics and/or Chemistry, to join our PGCE Secondary Science programme. The position is full-time and initially offered on a 1-year fixed-term basis (with the possibility of extension), with job share applications welcome.

The Secondary PGCE programmes at the University of Southampton deliver Initial Teacher Education within the University and work in partnership with over 100 local secondary schools. Our programme provides thorough preparation for teaching in relation to the Teachers’ Standards, while our research-led philosophy develops teachers whose independent and creative approach brings about high-quality learning and teaching.

We are looking for an enthusiastic colleague who will teach and support beginning teachers in Secondary Science, with a specific focus on Physics and/or Chemistry. Experience in teaching Mathematics would be highly desirable, enabling contribution across the wider Science and Mathematics PGCE curriculum.

The appointed candidate will have recent and relevant experience of secondary school teaching and will be able to:

  • Design and deliver high-quality subject-specific and pedagogical sessions in Science for PGCE beginning teachers.
  • Provide expert university-based teaching, alongside general science pedagogy sessions in cross-curricular contexts.
  • Visit PGCE beginning teachers in placement schools to monitor, support, and assess progress against the Teachers’ Standards.
  • Work collaboratively with school based mentors and colleagues across the ITE partnership.
  • Contribute to other areas of Initial Teacher Education and to Southampton Education School more broadly-this may include supporting the PGCE mathematics programme and contributing to undergraduate or postgraduate education modules, depending on expertise.

Working in collaboration with colleagues, you will have responsibility for:

  • Course design and teaching within PGCE Secondary Science
  • Supporting beginning teachers in developing secure subject and pedagogical knowledge across science
  • Arranging, observing and assessing beginning teachers during school placements. This requires regular travel to placement schools as part of the role.
  • Supporting and assessing beginning teachers’ academic work at Masters level.
  • Maintaining accurate records, moderation documentation, and professional communications with partnership schools.

We welcome applications for 1.0 FTE and job share arrangements.

The successful candidate will ideally be in post by 01/09/2026 with interviews being held in mid-May 2026.  This position requires DBS Clearance at an enhanced level; this would need to be obtained once the applicant is in post.

If you would value an informal preliminary discussion, please contact Lucy Hoyes (tel. 023 8059 1169 or email L.A.Hoyes@soton.ac.uk)
