The Division of Population Medicine is seeking motivated, experienced Post-CCT General Practitioners to join us as Clinical Trials Fellows. This exciting opportunity is designed to build capacity and leadership in commercial clinical trials delivered in primary care and community settings, directly addressing a key Welsh Government priority to increase the number of commercial trials available and related pace of delivery across Wales.

The role

As a Clinical Trials Fellow, you will play a pivotal role in strengthening Wales’ primary care research infrastructure and supporting the delivery of high-quality clinical trials in the NHS. Working within a multidisciplinary academic and clinical environment, you will:

  • Support the engagement of general practices and Primary Care Clusters in commercial research
  • Support individual practices to develop innovative, scalable models for commercial trial delivery in the community
  • Work closely with academic partners and research networks to reduce barriers to commercial trial participation
  • Build personal expertise in clinical trials methodology, regulatory processes, and research delivery
  • Contribute to outputs aligned with national priorities, including reports, publications, and funding development
  • Partake in a programme of professional development activities that build your skills and expertise in research delivery
  • Build strong academic partnerships by collaborating with and contributing to teaching and research across the Division, the wider University and the Wales Primary Care and Community Research Delivery Network

This post offers protected time, structured mentorship, tailored development opportunities, and a generous professional development budget for GPs interested in clinical trials, research delivery, and maximising the potential in Wales to be a leader in primary care clinical trials.

Why join us?

  • Be part of a nationally strategic programme supporting Wales’ ambition to become a leading location for commercial clinical research
  • Work within a highly supportive Division, with a strong track record of primary care research, supported by the largest clinical trials unit in Wales
  • Gain hands-on experience at the interface of academia, primary care, secondary care and industry
  • Develop skills that support future roles in clinical trials leadership, academia, or research-active practice

About you

We are keen to hear from experienced GPs who:

  • Hold full GMC registration and are on the GP Performers List
  • Have an interest in clinical trials, research delivery, or research leadership
  • Are motivated to support commercial research in primary care and community settings
  • Value collaboration across academic, clinical, and industry partners

Previous research experience is welcome but not essential; enthusiasm, curiosity, and commitment to improving research access in the community are key.

The posts are based at the Heath Park site.

Potential applicants are encouraged to contact the Dr Harry Ahmed, Clinical Reader on AhmedH2@cardiff.ac.uk to arrange an informal meeting pre-application.

These are part-time positions of 30 hours per week (working pattern to be confirmed) and are fixed-term from 1st April 2026 - 31st March 2028.

Salary: £113,424 per annum, pro rata (Point GP00 on the GP Educator Scale)

Cardiff University offers many excellent benefits, including 45 days pro rata annual leave (incl bank holidays), local pension scheme, a cycle to work scheme and other travel initiatives, annual increments within the pay scale, and more. It is an exciting and vibrant place to work, with many different challenges and is a proud Living Wage supporter.
