Applications are invited for the post of Teaching Fellow in Modern German History to teach in the Department of History and Classics for two years from 1st September 2026.

The successful candidate will have the ability to teach flexibly across a range of modules at undergraduate level, including both specialist German history modules, such as “(Re)Making Germany and the Germans, 1866-1955” and “Metropolis: Berlin in the Twentieth Century”, and also broader Modern European History modules such as “Safe European Home: Post-War Europe”, “Conflict and Identity in Modern Europe”, and postgraduate modules such as “Revolution in Europe: Cultures and Technologies from 1789 to Euromaidan.”

The successful candidate will have a PhD and a developing publication record in Modern German/European history. They will have experience of teaching at undergraduate level, the ability to develop teaching materials and engage creatively with students. They will be willing to contribute to the department’s efforts to recruit students and to provide pastoral support for students in the department.

With 45 full-time academic staff covering a broad range of periods and regions, the Department of History and Classics is a dynamic centre of research, teaching and external engagement. History is ranked 14th nationally in The Guardian’s University Guide, and the department, which sits within the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, has existing research and teaching strengths in the Modern European history. Members of the department are committed to providing students with a deep understanding of the past and with the critical skills to succeed in the contemporary world. They also share their expertise with the wider public through the media and engage with schools and external bodies such as museums, charities, think tanks, and government.
