Programme Director - Product, Ceramic and Industrial Design

The opportunity

University of the Arts London is seeking a strategic and highly experienced academic to join Central Saint Martins (CSM) as Programme Director for Product, Ceramic and Industrial Design. This a unique opportunity to contribute to and shape design education at one of the world’s most influential creative arts institutions. 

The programme sits within S School, alongside programmes in Creative Enterprise, Graphic Communication Design and Spatial Practices. The Programme Director reports into the Dean of S School and line-manages the Course Leaders within the Product, Ceramic and Industrial Design Programme. The Programme currently comprises five courses – BA Ceramic Design, BA Product and Industrial Design, MA Industrial Design, MA Design for Industry 5.0 and MA Design: Ceramics, Furniture, Jewellery. You will work closely with the programme team and play a key role in the School’s leadership team, working alongside the other S School Programme Directors and Dean of School.

This post involves disciplinary and academic leadership, programme management and proactive leadership and contribution to the ongoing work of the school. Through professional, research and knowledge exchange networks, you will promote the continuous development of the programme and its disciplines, responding to the broader socio-political context of practice and of Higher Education nationally and internationally.

The post holder will be responsible for the management and leadership of our ambitious Product, Ceramic and Industrial Design programme, including the design, development and delivery of the curriculum, and will be required to work collaboratively across S School and the wider college. This includes overseeing the current Postgraduate framework implementation process in the programme and ensuring the maintenance and enhancement of standards across the portfolio of courses. 

Programme Directors play a vital role in the School’s academic culture, organisation, and profile of CSM, overseeing a vibrant, inclusive, and high-quality student experience. The role is both internal-facing in relation to the programme’s courses and the community of S School, and external-facing in developing collaboration and partnerships with outside organisations, academic and professional networks, in London, the UK and beyond.

About you

We’re looking for an experienced educator with a profile and proven track record of education practice related to Product, Ceramic and Industrial Design and a strong profile in related research, knowledge exchange or other scholarly or professional activity. You’ll have a relevant undergraduate and postgraduate degree, a teaching qualification and demonstrable academic management and leadership experience.

You should have experience of managing and motivating teams and dealing with complex institutional and/or professional contexts, including issues of finance, HR and the implementation of policies. You’ll be able to demonstrate engagement with current societal and environmental challenges and will understand their implications for the development, direction and priorities of the programme and its courses. The successful candidate will be matched to an academic role on the appropriate pathway.
