Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering

The Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering (EEE) at UCL was established by Professor Sir Ambrose Fleming, inventor of the thermionic valve and hence the founder of the discipline of electronics, in 1885 as the first department of electrical technology in England. That same pioneering tradition of innovation and excellence continues to underpin our work. We push in new directions across research, education and entrepreneurship, building on our long-established links with industry and benefitting from our loyal and supportive alumni community.

The Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering at UCL is recognised as one of the leading Departments for research in its subject area, worldwide. It has ranked 3rd in the Guardian’s UK ranking by subject area and in the top 40 worldwide in the QS rankings.

London Centre for Nanotechnology

The London Centre for Nanotechnology at UCL brings together interdisciplinary research in nanoscience and quantum technologies. For over 10 years it has hosted major national quantum technologies research and training programmes, such as the Centre for Doctoral Training in Delivering Quantum Technologies, as well as leading large biomedical programmes such as the i-sense EPSRC IRC in Early Warning Sensing Systems for Infectious Diseases and AMR. The LCN leads Q-BIOMED, the UK’s Quantum Biomedical Sensing Research Hub a 5-year £24m national programme spanning several UCL departments and six partner universities.

Our staff and students have a diverse range of interests and expertise, covering many areas of physics, engineering, medicine, physiology, computer science, and mathematics. This provides a highly stimulating multidisciplinary environment for learning and for scientific research

About the role

This role offers an exciting opportunity to carry out research in the London Centre for Nanotechnology and teaching in the Faculty of Engineering Sciences. The post holder will provide leadership at the intersection of quantum technologies and healthcare, contributing to the vision and mission of UCL’s research and innovation focus on quantum science and technology.

This is an exciting opportunity for ambitious, high quality applicants working at the intersection between quantum technologies and biological sciences including health. The appointee’s field of expertise may complement UCL’s existing research strengths in quantum technologies and support new links into biological and healthcare disciplines.
