Lecturer in Computer Science

Overall, Purpose of the Role:

The overall purpose of this role is to contribute towards teaching in the Department of Computer Science and in the design, development, and implementation of tools, processes and infrastructure that support the delivery and management of teaching within the Department and the School of Engineering. Responsibilities will include delivery of teaching activities such as synchronous sessions, workshops, practical sessions, project supervision, clinics, tutorials, seminars, and the creation of blended learning materials.

Context

The Department of Computer Science at The University of Manchester has a long and distinguished track record in research and teaching in core Computer Science and across interfaces to adjacent disciplines. Founded upon the pioneering work of Williams, Kilburn and Turing, the Department was the first academic department of Computer Science in the UK and one of the first to run an undergraduate programme in Computer Science. The Department is among the largest in the UK, and thus has been able to develop research and teaching profiles that are both broad and deep, reflecting critical mass both in core areas of the discipline (e.g. computer architecture, computer engineering, information management, logic and automated reasoning, machine learning and optimisation, and text mining) and in several interdisciplinary fields (e.g nanotechnology, bioinformatics, and health informatics, neurological computing and HPC systems). The Department has a suite of in-house tools that support the delivery and management of teaching and internal administrative processes including:

Assessment: tracking, monitoring, deadline and submission management, unit calculations, and the application of mitigating circumstances actions;

Workload management: teaching allocations, and project supervision allocation with load balancing across staff

In addition to their teaching responsibilities, the successful applicant will be expected to provide leadership and support for the development, hardening, and roll out of tool support across the School of Engineering as well as identifying opportunities and contributing to the design and implemention of tools for other aspects of the School’s activities (including the appropriate automation of administrative processes using services such as Copilot, following a recent roll out across staff and students). This will require liaison with both eLearning and IT support services teams.

You will have excellent pedagogic, communication and organisational skills and the ability to work effectively with undergraduate and postgraduate students, and academic staff colleagues. You will be a self-motivated person that can use their initiative to work flexibly on their own or as part of a team. You will have a strong background in general computer science. You will be enthusiastic about the design and application of non-traditional teaching methods, to encourage active approaches to learning through practical hands-on activities and rich feedback models.

You will have excellent software engineering skills, excellent communication and organisational skills, and the ability to work with academic and professional services colleagues.

You will be a self-motivated person that can use their initiative to work flexibly, on their own or as part of a team.
