THE ROLE

The Hourly Paid Lecturer (HPL) in Business Management will be required to teach and/or lead a range of modules in the broad area of Business Management. We particularly welcome applicants who have expertise and can teach one or more of the following subjects: Marketing, Finance, Human Resources Management, Strategic Management, Project Management, International Business, Digital Skills, and Data Analytics. However, applicants with exceptional expertise and teaching interests in other subject areas related to Business Management can also apply. We also have a particular need for Dissertation Supervisors at all levels.

The post holder may be required to teach at both the undergraduate and postgraduate levels. They will be required to develop teaching & assessment materials, and deliver teaching with a student-centric approach in a variety of learning environments, using a range of teaching styles and approaches. The post holder will also offer academic and pastoral feedback & support to students to the highest professional standards, and contribute to the ongoing enhancement of the student experience.

The post holder will also have opportunities to engage in administrative activities and make a positive contribution to the day-to-day activities of the Academic Discipline and the Campus. These may cover areas such as dissertation supervision, student recruitment, research seminars and workshops, staff training, and professional development.

MAIN DUTIES

The main duties will include the following:

  • Offer teaching and student support at undergraduate and postgraduate levels of study, either individually or as a member of a teaching team
  • Offer teaching in a variety of learning settings, including seminars and small group tutorials, large lectures, and workshops, using appropriate and engaging teaching styles, within an established programme of study
  • Design and develop teaching materials and assessment methods for modules within a specific subject area, with a clear awareness and understanding of relevant quality assurance requirements
  • Supervise the work of students in a timely, professional, and supportive manner, providing necessary advice on study skills, research methods, assessment, and dissertation work
  • Undertake appropriate administrative tasks, including leading on modules to ensure the effective implementation and management of the curriculum and, at the request of a line manager, undertake cross-programme or Academic Discipline administrative roles such as student admissions, or involvement in marketing and open day initiatives
  • Offer appropriate advice, feedback, support, and encouragement to students, in both an academic and personal tutor role, to ensure a high-quality student experience
  • Be an active and enthusiastic member of the Academic Discipline
  • Engage in continuing professional development and enhancement through, for example: gaining membership of the Higher Education Academy; relevant University staff development; or membership of a relevant professional body

REQUIREMENTS

You should have:

Essential Criteria

  • Postgraduate qualification in a relevant discipline
  • Experience of working in the UK HE sector
  • Experience in teaching, delivery, assessment, and student support at undergraduate and postgraduate levels in subject areas relevant to Business Management with evidence of good student feedback
  • Experience in the design and development of module content
  • Experience in leading modules
  • Experience in supervising postgraduate and/or undergraduate Dissertation students
  • Evidence of good organisational and personal management skills
  • Evidence of excellent interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to work collaboratively in teams
  • IT proficiency and experience of using e-resources, including a willingness to teach by video-link, VLE, or online delivery
  • Evidence of the ability to balance competing pressures of teaching, scholarship, research, administrative demands, and deadlines
  • Demonstrable commitment to equality and diversity in working practices

Desirable/Additional Criterion

  • PhD/DBA in a relevant discipline

FURTHER INFORMATION

This role has flexible hours across the weekdays and weekends. Hours are allocated before each term (October, February, June) based on the HPL's availability and the Campus's timetabling needs. We have a particular need for Hourly Paid Lecturers during Weekdays (in addition to the Weekend). So, if you are able to teach during Weekdays, please specify this.
