We are a world class research-intensive university. We deliver teaching and learning of the highest quality. We play a leading role in economic, social and cultural development of the North East of England. Attracting and retaining high-calibre people is fundamental to our continued success.
Salary
Research Assistant - £33,951 to £35,608
Research Associate - £36,636 to £42,254
The Role
We are seeking to appoint a Research Assistant/Associate, who will work with Professor Paul Bushby and Professor Tamara Rogers on the STFC-funded project "Magnetism in Hot Jupiters".
The successful candidate, who will be based in the School of Mathematics, Statistics and Physics at Newcastle University, will be responsible for constructing, running and analysing simulations of the outer layers of Hot Jupiters. This will require a strong theoretical background in fluid dynamics and/or magnetohydrodynamics, in addition to excellent numerical skills. The post-holder will also play a key role in the dissemination of the results from this project, so excellent verbal and written communication skills are also essential.
The position is offered on a fixed-term basis for three years from the start date, or tenable until the project end date, whichever is soonest. The start date will be on or after 1 October 2026. We would be happy to discuss arrangements for flexible and/or blended working. Generous funds are available for travel, training and other support.
As part of our commitment to career development for research colleagues, the University has developed 3 levels of Research Innovation Role Profiles. These profiles set out firstly the generic competencies and responsibilities expected of role holders at each level and, secondly, the general qualifications and experiences needed for entry at a particular level.
Informal enquiries may be made to Professor Paul Bushby (paul.bushby@ncl.ac.uk) or Professor Tamara Rogers (tamara.rogers@ncl.ac.uk).
