The opportunity
This is an excellent opportunity for a veterinary surgeon to join Bioresearch & Veterinary Services (BVS) at the University of Edinburgh. BVS provides comprehensive biomedical research services, including veterinary care to animals used in scientific research and regulatory compliance, across the University. We work within a large and diverse scientific community and oversee all aspects of welfare, breeding and husbandry of rodents, fish, farm animals and poultry used under the Animal (Scientific Procedures) Act 1986. BVS is looking to recruit a Named Veterinary Surgeon (NVS) to join our enthusiastic and experienced team to cover for the maternity leave of a colleague.
As a NVS you will play a key role in advising researchers, technical staff and students on the health and welfare of animals used in research. Each NVS looks after a dedicated area to fulfil the duties defined by the Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act 1986 (Amended 2012) and the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons’ Code of Professional Conduct, promote the 3Rs and provide in-house Personal Licence training. This includes a 1 in 4 on-call rota after an initial phase of familiarisation with the role. The post holder will be part of the University’s Animal Welfare and Ethical Review Body. The NVSs work as a team to develop key aspects of processes and procedures and foster a Culture of Care so that we are always striving to improve the quality of research and the welfare of the animals under our care.
This role would suit an experienced NVS or veterinary surgeon with research experience who is keen to work independently and develop their skills and interests whilst part of a friendly team. Veterinarians without NVS experience will be considered if they bring relevant clinical experience and enthusiasm to the role.
Applicants should be members of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons, or eligible.
Appointments will be made at Grade UE08 (£50,253 - £61,759 per annum) DOE with additional on call payment.
