About the Role
The successful candidate will work alongside the Co-Investigator of “Unlearning Excited Delirium: Acute Behavioural Disturbance (ABD), Race, Mental Health, and Policing”. The role will involve interviewing people affected by ABD and accessing and analysing archives documenting the use of psychology in colonial governance. The successful candidate will also work with the Co-I to publish academic journal articles and a range of non-academic outputs.
About You
The successful candidate will hold a PhD, or be close to completion, or possess research qualifications and experience equivalent to PhD level in the relevant subject area for the research programme. They will be educated to degree level in a relevant field and have qualifications in participatory research methods, alongside postgraduate training in research methods. They will demonstrate strong knowledge of theories of postcolonialism, racial capitalism and abolitionism, as well as an understanding of state racism in Britain and the British Empire.
They will have a clear understanding of ethical research processes when working with vulnerable people, supported by knowledge of appropriate research protocols. The candidate will be experienced in planning and delivering their own work allocation to agreed timescales and quality standards, with a proven ability to access and analyse archival materials. They will have experience of conducting interviews with vulnerable individuals affected by harm or violence, and possess knowledge of the role psychology and psychiatry have played in state and colonial racism.
